May 2026

May feels like a month filled with celebrations. The sweet smell of spring blossoms fills the air around the pantry. It’s the start of graduation and wedding season. One of our volunteers welcomed a baby into their family. Congratulations to the Prendergast family!

Our amazing leaders, Vera Halpenny, Donna Assumma and Nancy Kaboolian, went to the Feeding Westchester Regional Partner Meeting. Teams from the 178 pantries across Westchester County came together to build stronger relationships, to listen and learn from each other, and to advance dignified and equitable food access for all of our neighbors. According to Feeding Westchester more than 1 in 3 Westchester households are at risk of hunger. The Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry was recognized for serving 12,532 people in 2025.

That accomplishment feels even more impressive when you add in that we are purely run by volunteers. There’s no village budget line for the pantry. Our funding comes from grants and donations. All of your support goes directly to feeding our neighbors – a weekly celebration of people caring for one another.

As always, our community turned up to support the pantry this month. The Dobbs Ferry Post Office held their annual drive for us. Its First-Class support from our neighbors down the hill. Dobbs Ferry High School students continued their support and filled a car with donations. The many bags included lots of cake mix – perfect for summer celebrations.

If you are planning to make a donation, we really need size 6 diapers and size 7 pull ups. We are well stocked with all other sizes. We are also ramping up for our summer supplement for families with kids, so easy breakfast and lunch foods are appreciated.

We gratefully acknowledge the ongoing support from the following organizations and local businesses: Dobbs Ferry Lutheran Church, Irvington Presbyterian Church, South Presbyterian Church, Temple Beth Shalom, United Methodist Church, Woodlands Community Temple, Zion Episcopal Church, MOM’s Organic Market, Panera. Stop & Shop, Sunshine Bagel and The Shop.

Tables full of fresh produce, breakfast foods, and spices ready to go!

This month’s newsletter was written by Sharon Bilman, who finds it oddly satisfying to neatly sort all of the donations onto our shelves.
